Wolff leaned forward in the passenger seat as the truck growled and groaned toward the Temple of the Oracle. He swept the sleeve of his cloak across his face. Despite the early hour, it was still far too hot.

“Can’t this thing go any faster?” Wolff growled, banging a fist against the dashboard.

“Yes, Grand Master,” Pyne muttered from the driver’s seat. He shoved the pedal to the floor and the truck’s old engine howled. Pyne wrestled the wheel as they navigated a corner, bumping violently across the gravel track. The truck’s lights swept through the undergrowth. Ahead, the road straightened out, offering them the first glimpse of the temple silhouetted against the lightening sky.

“There it is!” Wolff shouted, transfixed by the temple walls.

Pyne swung the wheel, and they bumped up a small incline. The temple grew larger and more imposing as they neared. They emerged into an open patch of dusty ground. Pyne turned the truck toward the temple, washing two massive walls flanking the entrance in the glow from the truck’s headlights. He applied the brake, and the truck squealed to a stop, kicking up a cloud of swirling dust.

Wolff wasted no time in flinging open the passenger door and scrambling down. He placed his hands on his hips and surveyed the ruin.

The men filed from the back of the truck and surrounded their leader. Each man was armed with an automatic rifle, plus a sidearm. The way they held the weapons proved that, although these were men of the order, they were warriors too. Wolff nodded to himself, pleased by how imposing his men appeared. Perhaps when Eden Black saw them approaching, she would just hand over the Seal of Solomon without question.

“Brothers,” Wolff said, addressing the men with his arms outstretched. “Today, we are on the cusp of greatness. But there is still much work to do. We must stop at nothing to get what we deserve!”

“For the eye and the earth!” The brothers muttered in unison.

“You start from the east wall,” Wolff said, pointing to one group of men. “And you start from the west. Brother Pyne and I will search the central chamber. We will trap Miss Black inside so that there is no escape.” He clamped his hands together as though he were trapping a fly. “Search every inch of the site. Eden Black is here. You are to find her and bring her to me.”

The knights split into teams and strode toward the temple. They paused for a moment as one man cut the padlock from the gate and then they all disappeared inside.

Wolff followed, striding toward the jagged walls within which some of history’s most powerful people came to seek sanctuary and solace. His cloak billowed out behind him in the gentle breeze. He paused at the temple’s threshold and scanned the walls which jutted upwards like the cracked teeth of a dormant monster.

“Eden Black is here,” he said in a whisper, his hands balling. “She is here, and she will find me what is mine.
